Tbh I’ve been holding off on drawing the mascot myself until the result of this survey is in - I might wind up changing how I draw them based on what name gets picked.
For instance, if it’s Furball, I might draw them as particularly round and fuzzy, more than I would otherwise. And if it’s Astra, I might make the eye glints kinda star-shaped. That sort of thing.
Besides, even if Astra takes it, and even though the mascot’s a fox, I wouldn’t say no to a nickname like “Astra the Furball.” What gender are they? Who cares? They’re a foxy furball!

I didn’t even realise FurAffinity’s mascot had a name at all, let alone that they were called Fender. In all honesty, I hear ‘fender’ and I think about the car part.
Furball makes me think of a small, cute, fuzzy animal, rather than anything like a hairball or a disparaging name for a Wookiee. Astra just…doesn’t fit. I don’t look at the mascot and think of Astra, and I don’t see the name becoming all that associated with Furbooru.
Then again, that probably doesn’t matter all that much, since Astra looks like it’s going to be a pretty convincing win in the end.

Honestly, it doesn’t matter. The site avatar can have nothing to do with the title of the site, and plenty of sites are fully aware of that. Let me give you a few examples:
Deviantart -> Fella
Sheezyart (while it still existed) -> Dante
Furaffinity -> Fender
Picarto -> MiMi
See? The name of the character and the site name have nothing in common whatsoever. And yet, whenever we see a round robot-like light-green guy, we all know that belongs to Deviantart. Whenever we see en enthusiastic girl with crazy hair color and a light blue sweater, we think “Picarto”.
People start connecting mascots with sites because they’re unique, not because one sounds like the other.

I don’t want the mascot’s nickname to be similar to an annoying toy, as well as it not being a name you’d want to have a sapient avatar to have.
I wasn’t even suggesting it being named Astra because of the space theme, but because it’s an actual name.

“Furball” is easily associated with a site, not with this site in particular. It can be also asociated with what one of the furry pet (cat or dog) coughed out. Not something I’d ever want to associate this site with.
