Now if you like one of the candidates or something, that’s fine and you’re entitled to your opinion.
 
But to see my perspective, pretend the candidates are Hitler and Stalin, with (insert candidate you’re okay with here) running in a 3rd party that is guaranteed to get fewer than 5% of the popular vote. What good does voting do in that scenario? I used to think that voting for the 3rd party would send a message to “Stalin’s” camp saying, “Hey I like your party, but you’re a phony who won’t actually bring about positive change.
 
Now I’m looking at it and I’m like, “They’re too stupid to even care who I vote for. If my candidate loses the primary, which I already voted in close to a year ago, then I’m pretty much screwed. I already voted. My candidate lost. Why vote again? The “lesser evil” is a myth.
 
Both candidates are war hawks who will be responsible for thousands of innocents dead in the middle east. Both will continue to fund Israel and Turkey who in turn are funding Azerbaijan to slaughter Armenians in the Nagorno-Karabakh region. 97% of the gravesites in the region have Armenian names and there are thousands of Armenian cultural sites there, yet the media portrays it as a “disputed territory” without picking sides even as shells with Israel and our names’ on them fly into Armenian fucking churches.
 
I’m not having that on my conscience. I’m not voting for someone who doesn’t give a flying fuck. Neither of the frontrunners can be trusted with our military and trusted to care about innocent human lives. Fuck em both, they’re both criminals and I hope they both die soon. This country is so fucked, but at least if Trump wins, then the bastard is out in 4 years and we have a chance at a real progressive in office 4 years from now, whereas if Biden wins we might not have a real progressive in office for 12 or 16 years- bare minimum of at least 8.

When you vote for someone, you give them consent to rule over you and make decisions with your tax dollars. You have to live with what they do on your conscience, with the power that you gave them. Remember that.

I will not be complicit in giving the highest power in the land to someone who will continue to use that power to fuck over millions of people. It doesn’t matter if it’s “slightly less fuckery” than the other guy. It’s still wrong and I’m not going to be shamed and ridiculed for not being complicit in giving them that power.

Not voting doesn’t take away consent. Instead it merely makes you passively acquiescent to whoever gets into power. The way the people in power see it, it means YOU DO NOT CARE and so they can do what they want. There are terrible aspects about both parties, and in many ways they are similar, but that is not to say that there are no differences and that one party wont actively cause more harm than the other. I dont like either candidate, but I can recognize that one candidate will lead to less overall harm than the other. One candidate is able to be pushed, and has shown that, by moving further on some important policy matters, including pursuit on anti global warming measure, (Though yes, still not far enough)
 
Which ethical system to you follow then, where it is acceptable to allow more harm to come to people through inaction? Voting is not consent so much as one action that can lead to harm reduction.
 
Seatbelts kill people too when they might have otherwise survived an accident, but in most cases the opposite is true. Sometimes harm reduction includes realizing that harm may increase in other areas even as the net harm overall decreases. To choose to say fuck it, I dont care which choice harms people less is to help lead to more harm overall.
 

 
 
So I ask again, what theory of change are you following where not voting will lead to the change you want to see, rather than voting for at least harm mitigation?

In your mind, how does voting third party lead to the changes you want to see in the world? What’s your theory of change?

Well that’s why I vented in the third place. I beginning to doubt that doing either is going to change a damn thing. I know that constantly voting for the lesser of 2 evils has gotten us into this mess over the last 40something years to begin with.

If it means anything, I can respect someone having their reasons for doing that and voting for one candidate or the other. They just should respect me and my decision too. Sounds like most of us are in a frustrated, tough position, really. /)_-

Well if you dont think that voting third party, or withholding your vote will change anything, and you seem to agree that there is a lesser of two evils, otherwise that argument would hold no sway here at all, then would you not agree that you have a moral obligation to harm mitigation?

Yes. I believe that denying Biden the presidency will mitigate the most harm by giving us an opportunity to have someone who will actually fight for good in 4 years.
 
We have a mere difference in that opinion. Just don’t blame people like me if he doesn’t win. It’s a candidate’s job to make their case, not the voters’. My opinion is that him winning is the greater of 2 evils in the long run, regardless of how bad Trump is.

Enough politics here. I don’t care if it’s ‘only tangentially related’ no, this is just politics, and one of you was warned about this before and should know better by now.

I’m sick of people assuming I own a cellphone because everybody else does. I got a call from one of my doctors earlier who gave me my appointment reminder and asked me if I could call once I was outside their office as part of Covid protocol. I was like “I wish I could, but I don’t own a cellphone.” This legitimately surprised the receptionist and she fumbled for what to tell me. So now I have to call the office when I leave, which is fine. But to hear her so shocked that I don’t have a cellphone in this day and age … MY LORD THE SCANDAL!
 
Seriously, is there some kind of fucking law that says I HAVE to own one of those things?

I mean not having a cellphone now in days is like saying you don’t have internet. It’s definitely the case that many aspects of life, like job applications and interviews don’t function without at least a basic brick phone.

I also find surprising you don’t have a phone ‘at all’ - Don’t be mistaken I personally rarely use mine; just work really. Once weekend starts and I am off work I always leave my phone somewhere forgotten till Monday however at some point phones are needed, hells just being able to use my bank account without ever going to an actual bank agency again is too much of win.

Believe me, it’s a conscious choice to not own one. I could if I wanted to, very easily, I just prefer not to. Also I don’t have any friends, nor a job, so there’s no need to stay in touch with anybody, because I don’t know anybody. Honestly if I want to do my computing or internet business that’s why I have a desktop at home.

People come here to vent, not to write essays on what constitutes politics or not. If you want you’re allowed to start a thread for that end but do not go off-topic in here again. We don’t want to be unpleasant Gyro but you gotta know when to stop.

Gah, a site I like is preventing me from having civil discussions on important topics with other members in a public setting. Its soooo damn frustrating and I wish they’d see that they’re being hypocritical with selective enforcement of the rules.
