Ah sh*t here we go again
So I’ve been thinking about it lately: I’m probably one of the oldest furries still active in the fandom. As most of you probably know, I joined more or less officially in 1997 and drew art up until roughly the mid-2010s. But I’m curious to know if all of the members here are the “next generation” of furries – people who are probably young enough to be my offspring – or if there are still some of the old guard floating around.

Here’s a little test to see if you are. I’m going to say some artists’ names, and tell me if you recognize them: Scotty Arsenault, Eric Blumrich, Shawntae Howard, Richard Bartrop, Scott Ruggles, Kim Arndt, Malcolm Earle, Jeremy Bernal, Steve Gallacci, Mitch Beiro, Roz Gibson, Kacey Miyagami, Eric Schwarz, Ken Singshow.

Do any of those ring a bell for any of you, or am I just the lone shaggy old wolf here?

Well you definitely have me beat in the official sense. I tend to put my “unofficial” starting point around 1994, but I didn’t really have any inkling there was an entire subculture built around the things I was interested in until much later on.

I must admit that a few of those names escape me, but I vaguely remember Shawntae Howard, and I definitely remember Malcolm Earle, Jeremy Bernal, Kacey Miyagami, and Amiga enthusiast Eric W. Schwartz.

I’m also a little surprised you didn’t include Jim Hardiman, since he worked with a few of those people.

I am technically very new to the furry fandom myself, but I totally recognized the name Scotty Arsenault! That’s Commander Kitty! I loved that webcomic, read the entire archive, both the original run and the reboot. It was one of the webcomics that inspired me to try posting comics online myself. I think I even drew fan art for it once upon a time. Gosh, I miss those goofy characters. Kinda stopped keeping up with webcomics when I got into Ponies…

Oh shoot, it updated this year. Thought for sure it’d’ve been defunct by now. Well, that’s one good thing to come from 2020 for me.

I mean, are we talking YARF! (The Journal of Applied Anthropomorphics) style old timey furries here?

full

Or more when we first got confronted by classmates for being a secret furry? If it’s the later, then some classmates at MCAD decided I was a furry because I liked Hyper Police. But, I mean, what’s NOT to like about Hyper Police?

Not liking Hyper Police would be like not liking Samurai Pizza Cats. And that’s just crazy talk.

Wait … I may have just confused myself.

Was Cerebus a Furry comic?

Hmm .. it might be. It’s listed in WikiFur, at least.

Oh my gosh I just realized that my Cerebus doll might actually have been my first “Plush”.

Shit. My friends in college were right. I WAS a furry all the way back then.

@Ciaran
Oh yeah, you go back a ways. I also come from the era of APA-zines and such (I had a sub to Huzzah! for awhile). If you want to count the time I was fanboying over the Sonic cartoon in the early 1990s with no Internet to reach out on, you could say I date back that far. And seeing that Cerberus comic reminded me I have a pristine copy of Albedo #4 tucked away somewhere, from 1985(!). Now those were the early days of the fandom.

@Heir of Rick
I included Scotty actually for his administration of the Yerf art site in the late ‘90s, but he did draw some really cute stuff as well.

@Philosofur
You also seem to be from around the same era, which is nice to see. Totally forgot about Hardiman, honestly (RIP), as well as a few others like Joseph Kennedy, Kjartan Arnossen, Vicky Wyman (she even drew pony stuff, god she’s been around forever), Thomas K. Dye, Albert Temple (also RIP), Dana Simpson (as much as I don’t personally like her) and even Doug Winger.

EDIT: Scotty’s got an original framed Secret of NIMH cel? Color me jealous!
