Ana: “More than hope; they’re likely to spread past the Mojave in time, maybe two years, probably less. They breed fast, hunt in groups, more than enough to bring down the strongest out there. They act in organized concert at first, but once they draw blood, but matter how big and tough the prey is, they might get some, but the rest will swarm it, tear it apart… I take it then that one of Grimm’s purposes was culling overpopulation counts, in that controlled ecology within the Complex?”

Ana: “A computer..?”

“…A ‘daemon’, perhaps? Like, an AI program compiled into neural networks running within cybernetics, and even your own brain’s tissue. I’ve heard they’re directly linked to a host’s senses, as well as highly skilled at electronic warfare and subterfuge.”

The mechanical growling back in the distance becomes more definite, until down the road, the four spot a small convoy of teratomorphic bots encumbered across their backs with netted-over crates,
marching forth with the people they’d seen back in the complex’s façade, now riding aboard jump seats on the bots’ flanks.
Val, aboard the leading bot stopped near the group: “Got a little close on our exit, hivelords almost cut us off, but we made it, even got recovered and sealed Sandra’s remains up for burial. Damn, though…”
“…Our settlement’s just out west of here along the way where we need to go. Will you all accompany us?”
