With the geneticists under his lead after explaining the dire straits of the synth population, ontop of the greenlight from Amy, Rameshvara assembles all of his department assets and staff, besides those studying the alien ruins, to work in merger with the colony’s flagship project. The task shift of R&D is near-instantly seen across New Scandia, as whole trains of lab equipment are seen being carted through the arcology over to the geneticists’ own hot lab, or at least station nearby.

Along with a few other synthbodied scientists volunteered for this ‘‘brain-boxing’’ experiment, the R&D director himself disrobes and lays flat upon a gurney-slab, digitally anesthetizes while wheeled into a mobile autocalving chamber for decontamination, gets immersed within a vat of bio-culturing nanogel, then is brought to the sterile genetics lab for this trailblazing procedure.

Arranged together in row, each test subject has the data-port of their skull carefully rendered open with case-specific tools tailored for security to each body-model, then has a fiber-optic cable plugged into the very substrate running their soul…

Bridging them through the cables over to a secure, hardwired server for clinically hosting and running bodiless synths, the test subjects awaken within a virtually simulated lounge, as if just waiting for another routine body-swap. In “realspace” meanwhile, once the uploadings are finished, the staff press on to the next parts of their task…

Installing three vats at a time into the bio-assembler, each pickled synthbody now without a running mind has almost every bit of their spintronics excised, giving ample intracranial space to fit an organic cased brain into. Thin, wiry implants are then tossed in a through an open hatch atop the vats to use as growth “scaffolding”, followed by the immersing nanogel being programmed to emulate prenatal brain development, even using pluripotent stem cells based on warm-blooded stock.

Within hours, the bio-assembler’s rather eerie-looking synthorganic manipulators manage to put together an entire batch of squishy new thinking-organs, even wedded seamlessly without surgery to cybernetics. Each bodiless brain is then ensconced within a ‘‘spome’’ module to sustain it indefinitely as long as paired to an energy source, and then that in itself is plugged and sealed within the hollowed-out head of the volunteer’s original synthbody it was floating with.

With the augmentations to the bodies complete, the fiber-optic cables plug into them again, this time interfacing with the cybernetics melded within the brains. Medical deep-scanners unfurl over each body’s head, blossoming into arrays of sensors imaging each brain using a combination of MRI, sonogram, and positional information fed from the implants themselves. Cais-01 proceeds with carrying out the final part, very carefully scrutinizing the nanogel as it sculpts, prunes, and splices each blank brain’s synaptic architecture into matching the connectome-maps of each volunteer.

Back in the virtual lounge, the volunteers soon begin to feel their perception extend back into realspace, as their simulated minds are linked and compared in juxtaposition with themselves also imprinted unto the new brains of their bodies to check and correct for any ‘‘soft errors’’. Slowly, the lounge disappears from their “second” virtual perspective… The vats with them still sitting inside are then carted out of the genetics lab to keep the place sterile, in case they can begin standardizing organic brain “wetware” to every colony synth.

Released just after the nanogel he’d been suspended in drains completely, Rameshvara notices his old synthbrain still sitting on the floor of the vat. After redressing, he takes his former brain with him as he heads for Rigg’s office.

(oh shoot son)

Everything over there will be relatively normal, Olive Riggs on her issues computer as per usual, although her desk is now also populated with a small, portable gun safe, a flask, and Riggs’s signature sidearm. Her ears perk-up upon hearing the door open, but she doesn’t look up for once. “Hello- come on in.”

“You’ve met miss Sada before, right? What the boss greenlit only while ago is essentially the same, but for now, just to replace the synth population’s processors with organic “wetware” until we find what’s tampering with them. I might switch back to this here eventually though.” Placing the synthbrain unto the desk. “For now, it’s still technically a valuable piece of hardware. Might keep it stored away somewhere, or scan and recycle it.”

“…you’re not even a bit weirded out, miss? I mean, I know there’s a ‘‘Frankenstein’’ vibe somewhere in all this.” %>->%

“…Yeah no this is really weird. There’s a fake brain on my desk and a real brain in you and I’m not really sure what to say about that…oh shoot all the synths on my team are getting brains, too? …Huh.” She tentatively picks up the brain so she can put it in the armory, evidently deeming it worth the same high security as some of this station’s firepower.
