the Eriksson was a pretty amazing ship, as soon as the crew was aboard it could act near independently and turn any floating rock in space into a colony, and later a member planet of the galaxy.
 
fabricators could turn any amount of matter into an equal amount in desired shapes, give them a set of ingredients and you get a full meal a bunch of electronic scraps and you had a new laptop.
 
being the second wave was a well desired job as you could lay claim to free real estate, and live in relative luxury while any poor sod that comes after you has to ask nicely to get some of your land.
