A scene from Sonic X Episode 69 at 5:28 [video deleted].
I used to think Sonic X is bad due to its mediocre animation, awful plot adapted directly from game and, most of all, Chris, the whining little abomination who keep stealing spotlight from the main cast. But upon revisiting, I find this old anime actually have some redeeming quality. Regarding animation, It wasn’t too shabby comparing with many other anime Japanese studio produce. I realized back then I might just raised my bar too high due to Sonic CD and Sonic OVA. Regarding plot, though I still hate the fact that most plot in Season 1 and 2 are just awful adaptation from Sonic game. Season 3 is all original with new character, world structure and enemy. Sure, the main plot is still cheesy and full of plot holes, but it’s very forgivable considering it’s target audience. Not to mention every Sonic’s main plot is pretty cheesy for that matter. Plus, Chris is significantly downplay in Season 3. Thanks heaven. And when he is on the spotlight, he’s actually useful, which make him a lot more tolerable in my eyes. Lastly, on a personal note, I really like how Tails develop his character with Cosmo. I always think this fox deserve more love. seeing him actually receiving the love is so…huh, what’s the word?…Moe? XD Anyway Shipping aside, in these story, Tails is actually developing to be an capable individual much like how he acts in the story of SA1 and SA2. Quite the opposite of how he is portrayed now in modern Sonic dimension where he only cry for help in the face of danger and can not really operate on his own. Instead of he cowering in fear when Chaos show up in Sonic Forces, Tails stand up against Shadow in Sonic X and despite being defeated and seriously injured, he still goes on. That is the quality of a hero and make him admirable even if he was not the one who save the day. Apart from Tails. I also really like how mature and even dependable Eggman become in the end of season 3.All in all, I find season 3 of Sonic X pretty enjoyable. The only thing I don’t get is why English dub version get butchered so badly? I find so many differences between how I remembered it and how the dub version show, especially the ending, that I had to found my country’s dub version to put my doubt to rest. In fact, English dub version severely shattered the aesthetics the original version intended to make. There might be a few jokes works well here and there, but overall it is pretty terrible. If anyone wish to revisit this old anime, stay away from English dub. :/
