Yes, I remembered that immediately after posting. Literally the first thing you do in Final Fantasy VII btw. I feel like you can get away with putting any themes in a video game that you want and nobody will bat an eye as long as you just make it in a fantasy setting and cute/anime. You could make a 10x bloodier, more fucked up GTA game and if you put cat ears and furry tails on everyone and put it set in space, soccer mom Karen and the news media wouldn’t even notice it.

Don’t overthink it… a lot of steampunk relies on “magical crystals” or whatnot to power machines (and their steam engines), as opposed to dieselpunk that’s a bit more explicitly fossil-fuel based.

Uhhh, so how many orders of magnitude less impactful on the environment are the airships? Should be at least 3 or 4 to not be ironic/hypocritical. Somehow I doubt they have solar panels on top and that the motors are connected to responsibly-sourced batteries.
 
Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for it if they are. My favorite part about final fantasy VII is that you get to play as an environmentalist terrorist.
