Description

  1. Elamite Robe
Used only during the reign of Cyrus II, the founder of the empire.

  2. Persian Robe
On 15th March 538 BC, during the coronation of Cambyses(co-regency of Cyrus II and Cambyses), the priest of babylonia refused to hand over the sceptre of the god to Cambyses because of his elamite clothings. The Elamites hated Babylon, where memories of their cruelty during an earlier period of occupation persisted. So because of this incident, Persians invented a new court dress, the so-called ‘Achaemenid robe’ or ‘Persian robe’. This is probably the most famous clothing of Achaemenid period.

  3. Median Robe
Probably during the reign of Darius I, the Persian robe was discarded by the army in favour of the Median tunic, trousers and cloak. Moving or riding must have been difficult when wearing the traditional Persian robe, which the Median clothing made easier. Until Xerxes I, the Persian robe was still used only at the court. Later, probably during Artaxerxes I, the Persian robe was completely discarded even at the court.
