Wolf did have one quark, though. He seemed like he was afraid of me, at first. I mean, he’s always been exceptionally respectful towards women, but, more over, I think he was afraid of messing things up. I asked him, later on, and he admitted that I was his first real girlfriend. There had been others in the past, but none whom he cared about; they were only interested in his money.
Just as Wolf was the complete opposite of the other men in my life, I was the opposite of any girl he’d ever met. When I was teasing him with that fancy teddy, all he could think of were those shadows of his past. He must have been worried that I’d be just like all the rest. But I’m not, now am I?
I guess he was testing me, too. When we were in the shoe store, for instance, the staff recognized him right away. They asked if I was his latest lady friend and if today would be another good day for business. He just told them that it all depended on me.
OK, so I sat down and took off my boots. Now, they’re heavy and not very lady-like but they’re also really comfy and don’t look bad with jeans or slacks. I had on a pair of Wolf’s socks, and you can tell they’re men’s. That guy’s eyes went from my boots to my socks and then up to my face. I guess he didn’t approve.
So I tried on, like, a hundred pairs of these stupid girly shoes and none of them felt right to me, but I didn’t want to make the guy any more pissed off, so I just sat there and let him do his thing. He ran out of casual styles and switched over to something more formal, so I had to take the socks off. Let me tell you, I don’t care much for sandals and I never, ever wear open toed shoes, so these were not what I’d call my style.
Wolf could see I wasn’t exactly having the time of my life but he just smiled and told the guy that today was not a good day for business. He took me to another shop and introduced me to Janet, an old friend from high school. While Wolf got a new pair of dress shoes, Janet waited on me. In about five minutes I had a new pair of sneakers, a pair of casual zip-up boots, and a pair of dress heels. Wolf kissed my cheek and told me I was the first girl he’d ever met who only needed four pairs of shoes!
