Many non-humans fight in human armies, especially in the territories of the Elarian Empire. Usually they get a better pay, more rights and a better social status in exchange, so many are willing to fight alongside the “oppressors” in order to secure a better future for themselves. The Ajshar in the drawing is part of the Elarian army, probably as a scout of some sort, judging by his lack of uniform. He was likely sent after some non-human rebels together with his collegues, and is now following the trail of an injured Sa’Jiir.
 
(on a side note, I really should draw more renaissance era rifles, they are sexy as hecc)
