I understand the internet thing. At the turn of the millennium I just happened to live in a town of around 1600 that had full connections.
Somehow I suspect the internet is what marked the beginning for a lot of people. Anyone who’s been around a while seems to have a story about venturing online and discovering they weren’t alone in their interests.

i must say i’m the most recent then. ever since 99 i’ve been a fan of anthropomorfic animals but i had no clue what a furry is, not even knowing that word existed (even worse considering how long it took for my hometown to have internet) then in 2014 i got to know the bronies and then in 2018 i “upgraded” to furry, but ever since 2012 i already knew about them, just never had interest on fully joining. so… 6 years official and 15 formative

Very interesting. For me, 2000 to 2001 was about the time I discovered the sub-culture and realized I was a part of it. Prior to that though… honestly, I’d have to say 1994 was the year my interests started to become evident. To me at least, since I wasn’t really the type to share that stuff with anyone else.
 
So let’s say 19.5 official, 6.5 formative, in my case.

For me personally it was a little of both.
 
I started calling myself a member of the furry fandom in the year 2000. In 1998 I knew what I liked but didn’t know there was a sub-culture around it yet. The art I found was from the fandom, but with no obvious traces back to it at that time.
 
So 98 and 99 were my flying solo years, if you will. Before I figured out it had a name.
 
So, if you prefer, 20 official active years, 2 formative.

Something that I always get curious about when people say something like that, do you count your time from the point when you first learned what a “furry” was, or from the point when you first realized you liked anthropomorphic animal characters a lot more than the average person?

if you take a look at any other furry art-sharing site, you can find a ton of mlp pictures. I always considered MLP as furry and the term “brony” was just a brench from the furry fanbase

I’ve always held that ever so controversial position of, there never was any difference. It’s just that some folks found themselves suddenly being super okay with a very furry type of thing when they had spent their pre-teen years hassling furries via 4chan or summat… and they weren’t comfy with it.
 
Imagine if this had happened in the early 90’s. There’d have been an entire Tiny Toons fandom instead of just being present in furrydom.

pretty much yeah. just like any other big fanbase. Another reason as to why i always considered bronies as part of the furry fandom. after i made the “upgrade” i didn’t notice any major changes from one fandom to another

Been in furry since 1998, myself. Things are cliqued today because young people can’t socialize correctly, but that shouldn’t stop somebody from being explorative and friendly.
 
Comment on art, make friends, have fun. Ignore the myriad idiots. Same deal with Brony really.
