Description:
This town in Central Italy was abandoned in 1915, when it was struck by a major earthquake and badly damaged.
The ground on which this town was built is what remains of a huge prehistoric landslide, which piled up in the valley below creating a lake.
The soft soil created by the landslide amplified the seismic waves, damaging the town far more than the nearby towns, leading to its abandonment and rebuilding about 2 km to the south, on an harder terrain.
