Finally, I get a chance to do some personal art! This is based on a section from Sonic #255 where the newly returned Bunnie regains her memories of her former life.
This was one of the most touching scenes I’ve seen in the comic in a long time for so many reasons. After the staggering flashbacks and confusion Rotor and Antoine experienced, I expected something similar for Bunnie. What I got instead was a deeply sympathetic moment where the visuals spoke for themselves without any word balloons to clutter up the page. It was a wonderful instance that expressed the close bond the Freedom Fighters share, not just on the battlefield, but for emotional support. I’m also delighted that Ian Flynn addressed the consequence of Bunnie being roboticized again, a topic that I explored in an earlier painting. I was afraid the continuity shift would just gloss over the change, but Bunnie realizes she lost her chance to be normal again, and I’m glad her husband was there to help her through it. It was such a beautiful scene and I couldn’t resist painting this when I saw it. :D
On a related subject, Nicole mentions in the same issue that she only has enough power left to restore the memory of one more Freedom Fighter: Sally or Amy. The question is, who will Sonic choose? His first instinct may be to prioritize the love of his life, but Bunnie’s breakdown shows that there are repercussions to remembering a hard life, and none have had it harder recently than Sally. After being roboticized and forced to fight her friends, what kind of effect will restoring her memories have on her, and is that something Sonic is willing to risk? Do you think he should still hand Nicole over to Sally, or would Amy be the better choice?
