Description

St. George was a Therapy Pony at a children’s charity hospital run by Catholic nuns, and so absorbed a great deal of religiosity and love for children. After The Bomb fell and he mutated into a humanoid form, he took it as a sign from the Almighty that he was being given the means to go forth and protect the innocent and defend the weak. When he tried to explain this to one of the surviving nuns, she was understandably confused. Everything was on fire, it seemed obvious to her that it was The End Of The World, and now the children’s pony was standing up like a man and talking to her? She thought he was a demon come to devour her soul, so she stabbed him in the shoulder with a letter opener while shrieking incoherent prayers. St. George saw this as proof of his Divine Mission, for had not one of the Holy Sisters knighted him in the name of Jesus and Mary and Joseph and many of the saints, exhorting him to go out and protect and save and defend? He thanked her profusely and set out to find weapons and armor appropriate for a Holy Paladin.

Dragon was a Western Lowland Gorilla at the Kansas City Zoo, and the only thing he remembers from his time as an Exhibit– aside from most of the human languages spoken by visitors– was that he was the Second In Command of the troop. Newly sapient, he was lost without a Leader until St. George showed up looking for any former-animal people who might have survived. Faced with the sudden appearance of a shining armor-plated Shetland Pony bearing a large triangular red shield with the word “YIELD” on it, the directionless Dragon knew he had found his new Leader, and agreed to become St. George’s squire and knight-in-training.

Dragon understands several languages, but can only speak in sign language; St. George’s three-fingered hoof-hands make it impossible to speak ASL, but he’s learned to understand it. Like most of the mutated apes, Dragon also has a great aptitude for anything relating to computers and electronics; he’s had special tools made to be able to work on small devices, since his hands are the size of dinner plates.

From my Adorable Creatures universe, which grew out of a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles And Other Strangeness RPG campaign from the late ‘80s. It’s set in the early 21st Century of a world where WWIII happened in 1995, and wasn’t nearly as bad as everyone had expected. It was still terrible, hundreds of millions of people died, but it turned out that the vast majority of the world’s nuclear weapon stockpiles… were fake. Politicians in the great powers had requisitioned trillions of dollars for defense spending over the decades, but had spent it on the same things politicians throughout history have spent taxpayer dollars on: ale and whores. Missile silos were top secret party caves for top military brass, with endless beer and nachos; nuclear missile submarines were underwater casinos for the rich and not-so-famous; strategic bombers were kitted out for Mile High Club joyrides for wealthy campaign donors; many of the real missiles and bombs had warheads made of carboard and aluminum foil and filled with sand. Enough warheads were real that most of the world’s major cities got at least one airburst, and national capitals and financial centers were targeted for big enough saturation attacks that they were destroyed, but by Day Two it was obvious that civilization had been wrecked but hadn’t completely collapsed.
In the aftermath of The Bomb, the whole world learned what Japan had known since 1945: All Radiation Is Mutagenic. Many humans began developing bioenergetic powers and became superheroes and/or supervillains… and many began mutating into animal-like forms. Millions of animals worldwide also began mutating, growing into larger, more bipedal versions of themselves, with functional hands and human-level (or greater) intelligence. These Beast Folk were common enough that most of the world’s nations, both surviving and newly formed, were quickly forced to acknowledge them as citizens to prevent mass uprisings.
