You make a good point that furry is essentially about the art. As far as I can tell, it’s about the only thing that self-identified furries have in common. My personal experiences with the furry community were a mixed bag.

Furry is not centered around anything in particular other than talking animals so it can’t derive its message from any “offical” source like bronies did with the FiM show, but I think generally furries are a very open and welcoming community compared to “normal” people and are very accepting especially for LGBT people as most furries are not even straight themselves.
