After a few years of working on and off on this, it’s finally finished.
And whadda ya know, it’s the cover to my fan continuation of the Post-Super Genesis Wave continuity of Archie Comics’ Sonic comic series(Sonic the Hedgehog/Sonic Universe).
I did my best to think of a more distinct name for this series but nothing fits more than Volume 2, because while it’s based on an existing series, we start all the way back to number one. Also due to the fact that this is an unofficial continuation, the story is by me and because I don’t believe Ian Flynn would want to discuss his future plans for the original comic’s storyline that he had planned before its cancellation. As a result, the story of this series will take place after the arcs that haven’t been released officially(Branching Paths/Freedom Fighters).
Now onto the idea behind this…
WOO! It’s been past five years since the release of the first issue after the Archie Sonic/Mega Man crossover “Worlds Collide” and we have seen the new version of Sonic’s world with redesigned characters, retconned storyline and more truer-to-the-source-material tone the series had gotten.
It all started on issue 252, which explains the numbers on the white boards held by the characters here.
And if you haven’t noticed already, this is a homage to Archie Sonic issue 125’s cover image by my inspiration Patrick Spaziante, Nelson Ribeiro and Josh/Aimee Ray.
As you can imagine, it was a challenge to live up to the already stellar original layout and the vast amount of characters there were to begin with. Most tiresome, indeed!
In fact, there were many changes along the way in terms of which character went where. Some of you more eagle eyed folk will notice that some spots that had characters originally were overtaken with others in their place(Naugus Twins/Nack &Nick). This is, for categorizing the characters evenly, based on their role in the story, order of appearance or purpose in the Sonic series. Think of the jumble of Meropis peeps on the bottom right or Breezie with the S6 Squad.
As for the artstyle I used, I’ll be honest… It’s varied but my intent was a fusion between two of my favorite Archie Sonic artists Patrick Spaziante and Tracy Yardley. Though as you can imagine, that idea is easier said than done and I thought I did a modest effort. I started doing the lineart around the same time as this deviation actually! fav.me/dah4vil
Just look at how long it’s been since I worked on this until now. :wow:
Nonetheless, the coloring is a mix of :iconherms85: whom I adore to death with hishis vibr pallettes and color choices/shading skill.
Eventually over time, after long sleepless nights, massive doses of motivation and the patience of Buddha, I got this done and I think I’ll be taking a well deserved rest and vacation, everyone.
Stay tuned for more updates in the next few months for more projects I’ve got ready to reveal.
One last answer to a question everyone has on their mind: when will Issue One be released?
Here’s a hint: the answer can be found on this very cover image.
