Description

I’ve had some time over the last few days while once again waiting for responses to stuff, which is dangerous ‘cause I start fiddling with stuff when that happens. First, I thought about what kind of clothes Mango might wear, seeing as she’s got this big wing-arms any kind of clothing that required arm-holes is pretty much out. Since she doesn’t have proper hands, just about anything that requires much dexterity to put on is also out, which pretty much limits her to simple drapes of fabric with holes in ’em to stick her head/hips in. So I made some simple clothes in that vein and eventually settled on a design I more or less like, though the colours are still up in the air. Then I got to thinking about my geonodes-based fur setup, and how the lack of interpolation causes the fur to come out a bit messy looking, so I created a new version that interpolates the hairs and provides a much cleaner result. I then needed to test it, so I wanted to whip up a quick little animation… which is this! As a bonus I could test out the physics on the clothes while I was at it.
But there was a problem.
Fur + clothes do not mix well. It’s a clipping disaster. So I hopped back into geonodes to see if I could work out a way of hiding any hairs that come into contact with the clothes, and after finding several methods that are broken and don’t work at all “because blender”, found one that does! It’s probably not super usable for animation because hairs will kind of pop in and out of existence as they touch clothing, but at this kind of distance and speed, it seems to work well enough. Would also be just about ideal for still renders.
So with that issue solved, I fired up the render, and this is what came out. I was gonna do a simple walk cycle as a test, but that didn’t feel “bouncy” enough. Mango looks bouncy, so I felt she needed something with a bit more… well, bounce! It’s a bit of a “flappy” jog, but given the wings, I’d say that’s appropriate, hah. Interpolated hair setup seemed to work well, at least I don’t see any issues from this distance. All in all, a successful little test I think!
Wanna test the interpolated scattering system a bit more, but once I’m sure it’s not busted I’ll make that one available too. For now, enjoy the barely-clothed bat jog.
