Description

Just scratching an itch brought on by my recent purchase of a used GameCube and Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness by posting some of the pokemorph pics I’ve done the past couple of years.

May as well start with the first pokemorph pic I EVER drew…it should probably come as no surprise to anyone it was Eva Helix, but the real bizzareness comes in the form of the guy to her right. I quote my long-ass dA description:

…while watching the copy of “Jirachi WishMaker” my son just got for his birthday with him, I was suddenly struck by a mental image of a Pokemorph that combined elements of Flygon and Salamence, two dragon-ish creatures from the movie’s climax that refused to leave my head until it was drawn. While drawing it, however, elements from a number of other Pokemon started filtering into the design until I had the bizarre amagam-creature in the center of the pic here, something I jokingly dubbed “Poke-Man.”
While drawing him, though, my mind kept churning and trying to come up with not only an origin for him, but an origin for the possibility for Pokemorphs in general, and the crux of that origin is summed up in the guy on the left and the name above hm: Team Splicer…hey, they’ve got Team Rocket, Team Aqua, Team Magma, and Team Snagem, why not? The idea was that Team Splicer is devoted to “bridging the gap between Pokemon and human in order to create the ultimate fighter, a creature with the power of a Pokemon and the cunning and intelligence of a human.” The epitome’ thus far of this goal is what they call “Ditto Suits,” so named for being based off of the genetic structure of a Ditto, the mimic Pokemon. The suits have a special “Splicer Ball” built into them that snags and traps Pokemon, then feeds all of its data into the Ditto Suit, which then merges with the wearer, making them a “near-perfect” mix of man and beast.

Of course, nothing dreamed up by the minds of man is EVER perfect, and the figure to the right of the page is a prime example. I dubbed her Eva Helix, grandaughter of the scientist who invented the Ditto Suit technology and recipient of the first malfunctioning prototype. In her case, it merged her and her pet Eevee (I love Eevees…) into one creature permanently; this same instability, however, enables her to use element stones to temporarily evolve herself into other Eevee forms (in a bastardization of the traditional method of raising Umbreaons and Espeons, though, I just have her use Moon and Sun Stones to evolve into those forms, respectively…what, is she going to raise herself to evolve normally?).

The plot that came to mind is that Eva breaks into Team Splicer headquarters and steals a new prototype suit being developed for the head of the organization, one that combines the powers of several different types of Pokemon. After thrashing the design data, she snags the suit into a special Splicer Ball and escapes, only to be attacked by Team Splicer members. She loses the ball and it eventually ends up in the hands of Adam Trainor and his 10-year-old sister, Lilly, a pair of Master wanna-bes. He’s a cocky fire-type specialist and she’s a brainy “human Pokedex” with a love of Water-types on her first Journey, but they don’t know what to make of the strange four-panelled Pokeball they find until they’re jumped by members of Team Splicer. After Adam loses his main Pokemon to the Team’s Splicer Balls and finds himself being attacked by half-human “monsters,” Lilly panics and triggers the strange ball; instead of releasing a Pokemon, however, it zaps Adam and turns him into the amalgamed creature. With the help of a newly-arrived Eva, he manages to drive off the Team hybrids; however, he also finds that he’s permanently attatched to the the suit, whose Splicer Ball imbeds itself in his chest when he switches back to human form. Now, the three have to find Eva’s missing grandfather (or grandmother, why be sexist?), kidnapped and hidden by Team Splicer, in order to remove the suit and rescue his Pokemon from the Team’s grasp. On the way, they are tailed by a pair of Team Splicer spies, but they’ll probably be bumblers along the lines of Jesse and James (I’m thinking of calling them Romeo and Juliette), as well as encountering other obstacles comon to that bizarre world.

Trying to draw in the style of Pokemon’s creator is surprisingly tricky, especially considering the details I typically put into my personal style. I REALLY like Eva, though, so I may try to draw her in my own style later, and I may make some subtle changes to “Poke-Man” and use him for a super-robot design or something. I had an idea for a gimmick, though, in that, like a real Pokemon, he can only use one offensive or defensive power at a time, and the type of power it is (Fire, Water, Psychic, Fighting, etc.) shows up in the circle on his chest as one of the Energy Symbols from the Pokemon TCG. Gives him a nifty weakness for the bad guys to exploit, too…

I think I officially need some kind of professional help…failing that, I at least need a beter name for the amalgam creature than “Poke-Man.”
