Description

I decided to distract from my usual characters and draw some other chars for once. Since I am big fan of foxes I thought that it would be nice ot make a little fan art of several not very well-known vixens from video games. Of course, I can’t say how known these girls really are, but they surely can’t be compared to such “pop stars” as Krystal from Star Fox or Carmelita from Sly Cooper. So, here we go!

Left to right:

  1. Rhene from “Inherit the Earth: Quest for the Orb”. Friend of the main character Rif and local “damsel-in-distress”.

“Inherit the Earth” is and old classic point-and-click adventure game. It takes place in the future world, where human race is mysteriously gone and replaced by the race of talking anthropomorphic animals, once created by human scientists. These creature call themselves “morphs” and see humans as their great ancestors and teachers. In the beginning of the game anicent human artifcat is stolen - Orb of Storms that predicts weather. Fox named Rif is accused of this because… he is a fox. His friend Rhene is being taken hostage by boars and now Rif must find the Orb to prove his innocence and save Rhene. He begins his search, accompanied by elk Eah and boar Okk (as a person that likes classic fantasy I find these two very familiar - I mean, tall and agile noble dweller of the forest and short, strong and grumpy guy from stone fortress. Seriously, Eah and Okk are literally an “elf” and a “dwarf”!)

I enjoyed playing “Inherit the Earth”, but as I learnt later the game was cut very severely due to several sreasons. First of them was budget - developers didn’t have enough resources to add everything they wanted. The second reason was publisher. The team intended to make ItE more serious game, suitable for all ages, it was supposed to include different adults themes, even death scenes. But the publishers decided that since it is a game about talking animals than it should be aimed at children. Because of that a lot of stuff was removed as well. Still some adults moments remained. Such as she-wolf Shiala bathing at the waterfall^^. I must say that these problems can be felt pretty well - second part of the game feels quite hollow and underdeveloped, compared to the first one.

ItE wasn’t commercially successfull (but became popular among furries) and didn’t get a sequel. Game authors created a sequel web-comic, its first story arc features Rif and Rhene as main characters (Rhene finally becomes an important character there). They also tried to go on Kickstarter to get funds for “Inherit the Earth 2” but unfortunately both campaigns failed. As far as I know they are currently trying to get resources for the sequel via Patreon. Who knows, maybe we’ll see a sequel to “Inherit the Earth” one day, though the chances aren’t very high.

2)Valessa from “Winds of Change”. One of the player’s companions as well as potential love interest.

“Winds of Change” is a visual novel with some elements of point-and-click adventure and RPG. It takes places in dark fantasy world, ruled by evil Triumvirate. Main character - Seer- and his/her friends (one of them is Valessa) lead the Rebellion against them.

I haven’t played this game myself, so it is hard for me to tell anything specific about it. Still I learnt some interesting info about Valessa. As I understood, she was originally supposed to be main character of WoC. However, later it was decided to make customized player character (players could chose hero’s name and gender themselves), while Valessa was “downgraded” to player’s companion. This decision was made in order to appeal to wider audience if I got it right. This may also explain one of the most controversial aspects of WoC - its huge gender disbalance. About 90-95% of game characters are males (for example, game offers 6 potential love interests for player, but Valessa is the only girl among them). It seems to me that the game was originally designed as a kind of “male harem” with female protagonist. This was changed later but the entire design still remained pretty much the same.

The game itself seems to be quite successfull and well-received (in furry fandom at least), still after reading some disucssions and comments I got an impression that significant part of Valessa’s target audience passed by WoC, so if one of her “missions” was to attract more players, it didn’t seem to work as intended. Which is kinda sad - “Winds of Change” sounds like an interesting project but because of controversial game design decisions it became more niche game than it could be.

But hey, as someone who likes both fantasy and foxes, I couldn’t miss the chance to make a little fan art of fantasy redhead fox girl!

3)Leah from “FoxTail”. Main character of the game, young vixen that arrived to her grandma during summer holidays.

“FoxTail” is another point-and-click adventure game, which is still in the development. First 3 chapters are already available though.

Leah arrives to the village to visit her granny. The old fox gets ill suddenly, and Leah begins to search for the cure, that requires mysterious mushroom known as “FoxTail”. She uses the notes of her passed grandfather to find it and also reveals the secrets of her grandparents’ past in the process.

Since the game not finished yet I can’t tell much about its development or backstage info. I can only say that I played first 2 chapters and pretty much enjoyed “FoxTail”. It is nice and heartwarming story that deals with such themes as childhood nostalgia and relationship with relatives (for example there is a touching and a bit mysterious scene where Leah falls asleep and talks to the ghost/shadow of her grandfather who tries to show her something in her dream.) I hold fingers crossed that the game will not be abandonded due to some problems and we will see finished product in the end.
