Gallus Crows!
In the fictional universe of the British novel series "Wicker and Wander Flame", there exists a race of merpeople known as seirenii. They look like typical mermaids and mermen, but they are divided into two cultures: a sedentary culture that tries to emulate either their lost civilisation or their human neighbours, or tribes that killed and ate humans for sport.

They are known for their unusual method of reproduction: females and males are able to lay eggs when exposed to the light of a full moon. They can also combine two eggs at a time to create a seiren that can have romantic and sexual emotions, whereas lone-egg seirenii cannot feel such (unless occasionally: hunter tribes consider romance to be a sign of weakness).

According to seirenii culture, two people combining eggs means that they are in love with each other -- when this detail was leaked from the authors, it attracted several fans into the franchise, as they saw that the possibility of gay or lesbian merpeople making their own eggs led to an "[avalanche of romantic fanfiction":](https://shipping.fandom.com/wiki/Bumbleby).
