By that first definition one could have a fursona and yet not be a furry. Say an anthropomorphic character you created that represents you, made independently of the furry community, and not associating with them after the fact.
That possibility makes that definition seem absurd

Well, CruFox answered already, but yes. I used to know someone being a Scyther (bug type Pokémon) and there are artists who draw MLP’s take on changelings much more bug-like and some people have such do identify themselves with.

I don’t want to search for this right now but I remember I found out about those groups a few years ago because some artist on dA that I followed who had a yellow reptile or dragon as their avatar which was a character that they used to represent themselves were in that (or some similar but with the same idea - not furries but drawing anthro/talking animals) group.

I think bronies are part of furries. It’s just that they base it on a certain show, makes them only like species from the show. Furries on the other hand don’t really have a certain show as a base. It’s like liking pokemons may and may not make you a furry.

Well, I guess people can identify themselves whenever, whoever and whatever they want to feel like to, however, I think this website shouldn’t have MLP content. People who want to see MLP content can just go to Derpibooru instead…
One of the things that made me visit Furbooru was that it was a Derpibooru-like website but with furries instead of ponies. It was also the first time I could see some furry fan artwork without having to go into other websites that are usually explicit (you could search for “safe” images, but going through the home page of these websites could already have explicit artwork. Since I almost never entered on these two more popular furry websites, I’m just speculating here).
I think it’s better having two websites, one dedicated for pony content while the other dedicated to furry content, even if pony images could be considered as furry too.
I also think that anthro images with characters from MLP should be allowed here, but ponies “in their original form” or from Equestia Girls (which are humans with no animal instincts) can remain on Derpibooru instead.
As for me, I’m a brony but I don’t classify myself as a furry.
But that’s just my two cents.

Please no, Derpibooru is a trash fire at this point, and plenty of us are through with it. That said, if you dont want to see ponies on here, filtering

My Little Pony

Just as @Gyro said, Philomena has very good filtering options and a fliter can easily hide all the MLP ponies. Because pony art is also furry art there is no reason not to have it here.

Aye, I’m completely done with Derpi at this point.
As for “are ponies furries”? It’s like any fandom-adjacent property, there are I am sure star-fox fans who are only into it because it’s a good on-rails shooter and have no furry interest. Some folks like ponies and even pony-content, but are not interested in the furry fandom as a whole, but there is large overlap. If you don’t want it, filter it, and for “alt-right infested imageboard refugees” it’s easy enough to watch the tag if that is one’s primary interest.

Not really, no.
The two fandoms aren’t mutually exclusive, but the focus of each fandom differs quite significantly.
A brony is a fan of MLP, that is to say they’re in it because they enjoy watching, speculating about and making works relating to the MLP show itself. You can be a brony without having any interest in the anthro side of it.
A furry, meanwhile, is a fan of anthropomorphic characters, which could be something as minor as facial expressions in Spirit or as major as full humanoid animals in Zootopia. The scope of what a furry can be interested in due to the characters having human qualities is almost limitless, although the majority of the fandom tends to stick to animals which, yes, can include ponies, however many furries also have no interest in MLP.
So you can have one without the other, but there are also people who happen to be both a brony and a furry, but that does not mean they are one and the same. Yes, there is cross-pollination between fandoms, but to conflate the two is to ignore the nuances that make each fandom unique.
