Description
Cancún is youngest among Mexican resorts - younger than Acapulco (Guerrero state), Puerto Vallarta (Jalisco), Los Cabos (Baja California Sur) and Mazatlan (Sinaloa). Development of area started in beginning of 70s and to the middle of decade territory that originally was swampy coconut plantation with few plantation workers living here, new resort started to be promoted to international public.
It’s more intriguing to not stay on Cancún beaches only, but also develop surroundings in Quintana Roo and Yucatan states - like Tulum, Chichen Itza, Uxmal, Isla Mujeres and largest populated island belonging to Mexico - Isla Cozumel that especially remarkable by having endemic (!!!) hummingbird that living on this island only and named Cozumel Emerald.
Sadly, despite tourism development Yucatan Peninsula population still among poorest in Mexico and to develop lives of locals, especially Mayan people you need to go on less touristic paths. It can be rewarding as Mayan traditional textiles are very unique and complicated and most people in Mexico are super friendly and kind.
