Description

Alright, 12 hours later it’s description time! I’m glad to see people have been rather enjoying these so far. This is something that came about rather randomly the other night, I didn’t even have any particular inspiration to do any gender bends, but I just randomly found myself doodling a female Sonic, and then each design one after another following. I ended up pulled an all-nighter working on them all together (this is probably the most artistically motivated I’ve been in a long time, haha!). So it was quite a fun exercise, I rather like working on designs one after another in this manner since it helps to maintain consistency in the style I’m working with.
Gender bending the Sonic cast is something that’s been suggested for me to do several times in the past, so I always held the idea at the back of my mind as a “whenever I get to it” sort of thing. Part of me didn’t really want to bother, since I’ve seen so many good ones around here and felt like I would be mostly repeating what’s already been done by others. The way I’ve wanted to approach the idea here is a little bit different to the norm with these things given my mentality revolving around alternate universes and timelines, the way I’ve designed each gender bent character isn’t just with the idea of making them aesthetically appealing, but to also consider the universal ramifications of each character’s gender being swapped.
So anyway, I’ll give a little bit of an outline for each of the designs I’ve come up with here, so prepare for a lot of tl;dr!

Sonic the Hedgehog
This one’s rather straight-forward since she was the first one I designed. I really wanted to try and preserve the simplicity of her character from her male counterpart, so universally I don’t consider as much to be that different for her. I’ve given her a bit of a sporty look to support her high-speed running. You’ll find with most of the designs here, I’ve kept and maintained their prime counterpart’s attire and elaborated more on it, so with Sonic I haven’t changed her gloves or shoes.
Design-wise, it was only after I fully coloured her did I realize that I accidentally made her very similar in appearance to my Sister Sonic character, Sister Sonic - Mail the Popful. Which isn’t particularly a bad thing, it’s nice that my mentality works the same way with the ideas that I work with. So with female Sonic here and like with Mail, for the female variation of Sonic’s species type, I’ve made them lighter in appearance. Their skin tone is paler, and their fur maintains the colour palette of Classic Sonic’s design while her quills are lengthened out.
Her clothes were rather fun to throw together, since I intentionally wanted to throw together something rather commonly done. I’ve maintained a consistent colour scheme with her shoes, and I’ve given her a bubble vest (because I was amused at the vast number of designs people came up with that during Boom silhouette speculation phase). So after throwing together the outfit in mind, I’ve replicated the colour scheme of her attire based on the official Human Sonic design: Sonic official human form

Mila “Tails” Prower
Tails was absolutely adorbs to design. While designing her, I was bearing in mind that all through the history of the Sonic fandom, Tails is one who was originally questioned with regards his gender, and throughout time has been designed by many as a female (I would say he is the character probably most popularly gender bent). That being said, it means I had to tread carefully not to repeat a lot of what’s already been done, although it can’t really be helped.
I’ve wanted to keep her basic form as much as possible, since she’s only 8 years old there wouldn’t be any mature body growth just as yet (so no breasts!). Like with Sonic, I’ve given her a lighter fur tone compared to her male counterpart. Goggles felt like a must, since I referred back to an old Sonic 3 spritesheet of Tails which included a pixel art of Tails handling a pair of aviator goggles, so that was something I wanted to apply here. Likewise, I’ve taken to the more modern side of his development and have carried over aspects of his Boom design, carrying over the use of a utility belt and wrench.
Again, like with Sonic, I’ve used her shoes as a basis for her design, carry over to her bodily clothing a design that would sit well with the established shoes she’s wearing. Personality-wise, like Sonic she’s a character I’ve more directly wanted to maintain with little change to her prime counterpart, as the central focus is the sisterhood between her and Sonic.

Knuckles the Echidna
This one was rather fun to conceptualize, haha. With Knuckles here I’ve considered his Classic incarnation as well as integrating a lot of Echidna history references introduced on Sonic Adventure 1 (and things I reference in my Expanse continuity). With regards her genetics, as a female of their species she doesn’t bear the trademark “knuckles” of her tribe, nor does she possess the Guardian crescent birthmark on her chest. But as the last in her species, and the destined Guardian of Angel Island, there have been trinkets passed down to her by her pre-incarnations; a pair of brass knuckles for warding off enemies, as well as a neckpiece with the Guardian crest marked on it, representing her status as protector of the Master Emerald.
I’ve adjusted her fur colour as with the previous two to be lighter in tone, becoming more of a dark pink for two reasons; Carrying over his pink-ish tone in his Classic incarnation’s sprite design from Sonic 3, as well as to draw reference to the Knuckles Tribe soldiers shown in Sonic Adventure 1. Her attire colour scheme I had a bit of fun with! One particular change I wanted to make was the swap between green and yellow, as I wanted to give her Sonic 3 Knuckles’ trademark “angry yellow socks”! So with the rest of her full body clothing, I’ve kept a constant scheme of green, yellow and red, and the clothes themselves were inspired by Tikal and Pachacamac, with her skirt pattern ripped right from Pachacamac’s skirt design.
Personality-wise this is where I start to diverge more universally. I’ve considered Knuckles being more serious about her duty than her male self, as her Guardian crest and weaponry were passed down to her directly and something she has been given, rather than being something she was naturally born with and forced to bear. She respects what it means to her and the world, and gives it her absolute all to maintain that honour.

Shadow the Hedgehog
For those who have been following my gallery, her outfit design might seem a bit familiar, as I’ve taken it directly from my Human Shadow design I came up with a few weeks ago: The ARK Chronicles - Say cheese…?. I’ve created the outfit to be something of a “Project Shadow” uniform, with the design created to expand across her body upon the design introduced in Shadow’s hover shoes, with referencing also to Maria’s outfit, which I consider a general ARK wear.
Her design is rather simple, for a while I’ve actually wanted to design another female Shadow to contrast from the one I did several years ago and gauge how much my design mentality has changed. I’ve given her longer quills to mirror the length I’ve given Sonic’s. I’ve given her an extra set of small quills on the upper part of her head, as with my human Shadow design, I wanted to emphasize a bit more referencing to Black Doom as her progenitor. And also like with my human Shadow, I’ve referenced her male counterpart’s biological detail of a white fur as a tuft of hair her head. Her fur is lighter in tone and more of a midnight blue as shown in Sonic Adventure 2.
Universally, her past is a lot more obscured than it is in the prime universe. Created by Geraldine Robotnik as the biological progeny of the alien matriarch, Black Doom, she actually has much more of a closer hive mind connection to her host mother. Despite this, she has a deepened emotional bond with her earthly human companions, which more or less makes her more conflicted in herself (as she does still care about the one who brought her life). In the present upon her release from Prison Island, Shadow presents herself as a swirling ball of wild emotion, haha.

Silver the Hedgehog
This is a design I’ve probably take a lot more liberties with than the rest, since she’s from the future, she basically represents what it means for a universe that has been swapped around in gender, to have a different future for itself as an alternate timeline. For those familiar with Silver’s design origins, I’ve based a lot of what I have here on a couple of his concept designs:
img2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20…
img1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20…
I’ve given Silver here an orange fur lining across her neck and chest like Venice, as well as giving her a flattened quill scheme as per the secondary concept design. Her skin and fur tone is paler than her male self. Her under clothing is an elaboration of her boot and cuff design, while the overcoat is an extra extension I’ve given her, basing her jacket on the boot design on Venice. So as I’ve referenced Venice who is very popular in the fandom, this helps to explain something else I consider in one of my Expanse alternate timeline futures.
Venice is a character I actually integrate as a character in my Earth-2 timeline’s future as the variant of Silver himself from that world, representing how Silver could have been if circumstances were a bit different. In the same manner I use Venice there, female Silver here is a lot different to her male counterpart according to history’s development. Being born a female in a flame ravaged future where resources are low, she’s grown up to be a physically frail young woman. However while physically she isn’t as able as her counterpart, her growth and nourishment has gone into her ESP development, being more fine-tuned and adept at using her powers than her male self. She likes to lay low and follow along with the traveling packs of survivors rather than chase Iblis down head on, but this makes it easier for her to protect her people.

Rascal the Hedgehog/Jamie Rose
Rascal is where I start go really serious with the universal ramifications of swapped genders (since the female-to-male repercussions are more drastic than the male-to-female ones). In this world, Rascal still develops a crush on Sonic who is a few years older than he is. But as a male, in this world unlike that of his prime counterpart, he does not change up his style as he grows older in order to impress Sonic. From his childhood progressing into a teenager, he doesn’t share his female counterparts insecurities and need to impress her crush by changing her appearance, but as a result he also doesn’t have much shame in his appearance, and his sense of “style” is still stuck in the 90’s!
His design was very fun to come up with. The whole idea of his character I wanted to play with is to do something a lot different to what others have done. Species-wise, I’ve done the opposite to what I’ve done with the male-to-female hedgehogs and actually made her fur darker than her female self, making her more of a rose red colour. Physically she shares the same sort of bodily frame as the male Sonic, but I’ve carried over elements from her hair/quill design (I’ve kept her having normal hedgehog quills, since Classic Amy’s quill shape wasn’t that much different from Sonic’s originally). Also given him a heart-shaped belly patch, the represent the still romantic side of his personality.
Rascal’s clothes were fun to design, since I wanted to carry over elements from Classic Amy’s clothes while translating it into a male design. I’ve given him loose green arm warmers, representing Amy’s puffy shouldered dress. With his boots, I’ve blended Amy’s Classic and Modern’s shoe designs, making the boots modeled after the Modern incarnation, while the design itself is blended with her Classic design’s shoes (they’ve come out looking like a hybrid between Converse sneakers and a pair of moon boots, haha!). And finally I’ve given him a stylish pair of prescription sunglasses (because he has troubled eyesight, he can now wear glasses in style!). All in all, he was created to look dorkishly un-cool.

Creme the Rabbit and Cheese the Chao
This design was very, very simple to come up with, since prime Cream herself’s design was very simple to begin with. Not much I can really describe about his design besides taking away his clothes and eyelashes. I’ve given him a slight fringe like I’ve previously given Cream in my Makeover series, and for his attire I amusingly just swapped around Cream and Cheese’s accessories, giving Creme Cheese’s bow tie, while Cheese (now female) has Cream’s bow ribbon.
That being said, despite his design not changing much, universally Creme is quite different as a male. Living alone with his single father, Vanille, and being strictly home-schooled, Creme has grown to become quite a troubled young boy. Having a rather distant relationship with his dad and his inability to develop in a healthy emotional manner, Creme has had a tendency to act out and get into all sorts of mischief when his father isn’t around. Creme himself is able to hind his true nature with a gentle smile, but his rowdy nature is subtly evident through the development of his Chao companion.

Agent Rouge the Bat
Funny thing, Rouge isn’t even a favourite character of mine, but whenever I do a design that’s Rouge-related, it always turns out quite awesome, haha! Rouge here is a major badass. The design was fun to come with while considering the alternate timeline mentality of this world. I’ve based his attire more on prime Rouge’s Heroes outfit, as I consider it an outfit she wears when she’s off-duty from G.U.N. work. So his jacket and boots are based on Rouge’s design from that game, with some alterations to suit his gender (the pink is now something of a rose red, but still enough pink to show off his sass, haha!). I’ve converted his wings into a mantle-like appearance as I’ve previously done in my Makeover series Rouge design, I’ve made his boots black instead of purple, and also note the upside-down heart on his belt, which represents his character a bit.
Rouge, as per his female counterpart, is still an active member of the G.U.N. and a part-time thief. Both of them have grown up in the thieving, and eventually growing up to be on a professional level. Male Rouge has to work very hard to achieve his goals, as he is unable to simply woo his sources or face underestimation to get by. He’s thoroughly honed his thieving skills, and has even fine-tuned his “persona” to suit different scenarios. Rouge takes on many faces on a daily basis, as a result his mentality has become quite warped to the point where he doesn’t particularly recognize who is at times. He’s a hard workaholic and does what he can to get the job done.

Chief Tikal the Echidna
Tikal was also quite amusing to design, drawing reference to Boom!Knuckles as well as the Echidna soldiers from the Knuckles Tribe and Tikal’s father, Pachacamac (buff Echidnas ftw yo). His design is obviously based on and referencing the Knuckles Tribe, and many elements of his design are taken from Pachacamac. So his design is preeeetty straight-forward if you’re familiar with Pachacamac’s design:
img1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20…
As a member of the Knuckles Tribe royal line, Tikal is next in line as the Chieftan of the clan. His father died at a very young age, so he has been nurtured and encouraged by his mother, Pachamama to be a strong leader and uphold their family’s values. Although Tikal is a pacifist at heart, he cares a lot about his mother despite her warmongering nature and would do whatever she asks of him, having a firm sense of family duty and honour. He’s become the Knuckles Tribe’s finest warrior, however his morality is put to the test when he’s set to lead an assault on the Master Emerald shrine.

Prince Blaze the Cat
Blaze’s design is also very straight-forward, requiring very little adjustments from his female design. Like with my female Sonic, I’ve accidentally drawn reference to another design I have previously come up with for Blaze’s father: Blaze’s Parents. So I’ve unconsciously drawn reference to this for Blaze’s male counterpart, haha. I’ve made his fur darker in tone, obviously gotten rid of his clothing sans the shoes and gloves, and a central focus of his design is the added inclusion of Blaze’s concept design cape: sonic.wikia.com/wiki/File:Blaz… His ponytail has been shortened and bunched up, and I’ve carried over elements from Big’s design into him (cheek tufts, bigger bushy tail, inclusion of a slight belly patch). And just for extra royal measures, I’ve given him the Jeweled Scepter from Sonic Rush Adventure.
Prince Blaze is a strong royal figure, and doesn’t actually have that much difference from his female counterpart in terms of growth and development. The real differences start to show when he meets the trans-dimensional Sonic and realizes a serious threat to his world. Blaze isn’t as emotionally curious about the idea of friendship and bonding, but instead simply wants to eliminate the threat to his kingdom, and to cut off the connection to the Chaos Dimension. Blaze will do anything to protect his world, even to the point of wielding the Jeweled Scepter to his advantage when it comes into his possession.

Man, this took so long to type out, I’m glad I didn’t try to do this before going to sleep, haha! This isn’t overly necessary to read, it’s more just for viewer enjoyment for those who are interested in the ideas I had in mind for each character. Overall, a fun on a whim experience! Maybe I’ll do some other characters in the future. For those interested, I’ve also re-uploaded this image in a slightly higher resolution.
