For a cell tower technician, the only thing more annoying than squirrels nesting on a tower is anthro squirrels nesting on a tower. Especially anthro squirrels with a law degree. After the groundbreaking court case Bannertail v. American Tower Corporation, companies were ordered to reinforce branching supports of all camouflaged cell towers to ensure the safety of anthro squirrels. See, unlike their feral cousins they are instinctively drawn to perch on the tallest trees, and tree-shaped cell towers are usually much taller than the real trees surrounding them…
 
To be honest I hadn’t initially thought of camouflaged cell towers, she was supposed to be perching on a power transmission tower. Then while looking for references the cell towers showed up and they felt much more fitting for the scene. This happens quite often to me: I start with a typical fantasy trope or with a simplistic idea, I keep it around for a while, and then a more intresting take on the same idea comes to mind. It’s one of the reasons I work at a relatively slow pace.
