Here’s my entry for the #SlugcatLife contest being held by Adult Swim Games. I really like Rainworld so far, and I love all the dilapidated scenery.
Mechanical pencil and charcoal. Scanned from… Scanner! (I think it’s a Pixma.) Edited and colored with GIMP2 on my laptop.
This is actually only a portion of the original image, which wasn’t skewed to one side. I felt that its original form didn’t evoke as much tension in the atmosphere, plus I didn’t line up the piping properly in the background, which the skewing conveniently cuts out. :) Win-win!
I drew everything by hand first and shaded everything that I wanted to give a more gritty texture. Pretty-much everything other than Slugcat and the grating got traditional shading. In post-processing with GIMP2 I adjusted the brightness and contrast before overlaying everything with color at anywhere from 20-30% opacity - which tends to give a washed-out look and forces a balance between details and coloration. After that, mainly just putting in some complimentary colors (color bouncing from one object onto another) and highlights! Overlaying everything thinly with the sky’s color also helped to set the mood a bit.
I’m working on showing more of my drawing technique and process on Youtube, but video-making still a learning process for me. :D
