Why can't we change/add descriptions?

I am a liker for doing archives and stuff, and some people just, don’t add descriptions from the original sources and you can only add descriptions from your own post, i wanna know why is that

Editing descriptions is locked to the uploader and staff team to avoid vandalism. As the site is now, there’s no image description history like there is for comment edits or forum edits which would be required before thinking about giving description editing to everyone.
