About 2.16% of all yearly deaths in the US are currently from criminal homicide. To people who don’t understand percentages well, this might sound low, until you realize this means that 1 out of every 46 people in the US dies by criminal homicide. That’s about one out of every 1A size high school graduating class. Weird to think that statistically speaking, someone I grew up with in high school (or myself) is going to get killed.
This doesn’t even include homicides that aren’t deemed criminal by the state, like the majority of the time when cops shoot people, when rich people claim self defense, and sometimes even when a poor person defends themself.
The only things we’re number 1 in is obesity, incarceration, illicit drug use, divorce, blowing money on inadequate healthcare, student loan debt, blowing money on the frickin military, and complexity in our tax system.
And if this sounds like a uniquely USA problem, not exactly, but we are significantly worse than average. As far as the actual homicide rate goes, we’re at somewhere around a 5.3. 55th worst out of 167 nations. So, that’s like, a C- or a D+ I guess. For Christ’s sake- Rwanda, Niger, Cuba, Kazakhstan, and Kenya to name a few are all doing better than us. Do any of those sound like particularly prosperous, happy, and safe places to you? Well, a few of them are doing better than us in multiple metrics.
The only things we’re number 1 in are incarceration, obesity, tax system complexity, blowing money on inadequate healthcare, student loan debt, blowing money on the military industrial complex, and divorce.
Is it really that hard to understand why people hate this country and burn our flag? You can stick your head in the sand and say, “CUZ their terrorists and they’re gay and their STUPID and they HATE FREEDOM” and “IF YOU don’t like it, why don’t you LEAVE?” all you fucking want, but it doesn’t change reality you fucking cowards.
